Thermostats can become stuck in the closed position and cause an engine to overheat. In this event, the coolant temperature will likely rise quickly to the boiling point determined by the system pressure cap and exhaust to the ground. This condition is very rare and in most cases the thermostat is not the cause of an overheating engine.
